I also have an Outback, but it's quite similar to the Legacy. My '07 Outback is the 6-cylinder that you can't get in a Legacy, so I can't compare there, but my '06 Outback had the 4-cylinder that you would get in the base Legacy. It's an acceptable engine, but I felt like I was flogging it to get into traffic at merges, etc. It never complained, but I passed the 4-cyl to my daughter and bought a 6-cyl for my right foot.
Prior to the Subaru's, I had a Honda Accord (6-cyl) and I thought I'd never buy anything but another Honda. Now I'm thinking that way about Subaru's. I don't know that I will "need" another Outback when the time comes, but if that's what I have to buy to get the 6-cylinder engine then I will. The turbo was "fast," but not "quick," if you know what I mean.
Go to any news stand NOW (or your library) and pick up the April issue of Consumer Reports. You'll see just how well the Subaru rates in any category that you are interested in.

The current Legacy should be decent. It should be a step up from the previous generation mechanically. As long as the motor doesn't slap like crazy, the Legacy is a good car.
By the way, the Impreza you saw was not assembled in Washington state. Washington is the port of entry, meaning where the ship full of Subarus arrives from Japan. Subaru's only plant in the U.S. is in Lafayette, Indiana. The Legacy, Outback, B9 Tribeca, and (some) Camrys are assembled there with engines and transmissions (and other parts) shipped in from Japan (except in the case of the Camry).

They are put together very well. The handling AWD system and the safety of all Subaru cars are great. The Impreza and Forester are built in Japan and the Legacy and Outback and Tribeca are assembled in Indiana. Toyota owns about 10%of Fuji(Subaru) and is suppose to assemble the Camry at the same plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

I have a 2006 Outback. It's a crossover that drives like a sports car. Precise, responsive steering; a tight turning circle; a low center of gravity, and all wheel drive. It's quieter than the Forrester, but the back seat's a little snug. In terms of the parts and manufacturing, check out April 2007's Consumer Reports (auto issue).

nicely the Legacy is an exceedingly outstanding and sporty vehicle. I truthfully have pushed them and that i love them. yet I also love the Mazda 3. The Mazda 3 handles more suitable powerful and has a nicer searching interior universal and that's more suitable interesting to emphasise quickly. The Subaru is larger and bigger effective and faster. both are good good high quality vehicles. i visit't make a decision from them.

its still a good car. Just assemebled in the USA. Subarus are great cars, you can tell because they hold their value and very seldom do you see newer cars traded in.
