They should be, but political gamesmanship prevent that from happening. Put up a wall and get called a racist. Ask for ID and get called a racist. Kick illegals out and get called an enemy of the poor. If this was easy, we would have a working solution.

Two reasons, one legitimate, the other questionable/crap at best. First reason, there is a lot of border to secure. You have the entire East and West Coasts to secure. Add in the Gulf Coast, and those alone are ridiculuously porous, and someone could just come in on a little runner and get through. Now add in the borders with Canada and Mexico, and the logistical problem is huge.

The second reason, with which we can assign actual blame to people, is that the government is too unwilling or unable to act. Vested interests in illegal immigration (contributing to lower wages), and simple laziness make this a hellishly difficult problem to fix. But government deserves more of the blame, because they have the ability to act.

I've been wondering this for a long time. If there are so many illegal immigrants crossing our borders then how difficult would it be for a terrorist cell to do the same? It's scary. It was also scary how terrorists could get access to cockpits and take over planes with box cutters. I would have thought that after 9/11 the government would have taken up immediate measures to secure our borders. But I guess I must be naive.

We are working on it! It will only be 1 more year, and then if you leave the US without your passport, even to go on a boat trip, or go to Mexico or go to Canada - you wont ever get back in.

The great wall of Mexico continues to be created, and fewer and fewer border crossing happen all around the border. They are only crossing in select places now.

More laws are coming down from Congress. You boat yourself into the country, you get a Federal Felony record so you can never return, and you are deported from the country.

In a year and a half, un-maned automated drones will patrol all airspace around the US. If you dont respond with what that drone wants, it shoots you down out of the sky.

Similar versions are being made to hunt down and destroy ships illegally entering our waters.

Dont worry - we are getting there! Soon we will only have to worry about the terrorists that are already in our country, and for them, it's only a matter of time before we get them good.

Why secure a border when you can get migrant workers to take jobs in this country for little of nothing? I think big business has a whole lot to do with it. As far as terrorist threats, I tend to worry a little more about the sleeper cells (the ones that have already infiltrated our country).

There is no simple solution, that's why.

Further, politicians are afraid to alienate Hispanics. Being tough on the border could be misconstrued as being racist.

A wall won't do much of anything, and you could station more border patrol agents, but ultimately this problem requires a complex solution. Complex solutions scare voters. Hence, there will be no solution in the foreseeable future.

It is true that terrorism is a threat. However do you really think that all that "security" would stop a terrorist? No, the government is pouring billions of dollars into a show that is put on at every port, airport, and point of immigration.

Because Bush forgot to fund his new 'security fence' project last year--when he signed it into law.

It was more symbolic in nature, than it was workable in real life.

But above all, most Republicans see the "vulnerability" of our nation's borders as prime political real estate.

They need more attacks to scare more funding out of Congress.

Because Democrates and Republicans don't want to deal with the issue of closing our boards.

Cuz! Where are our troops?! Where does the burning Bush want to send more troops?! So who is left to secure our borders? Better grab our guns while it's still one of those dwindling "rights"! * * I SAY IMPEACH THE PUNK!**
