stereotypes fly around about how black ppl who dont listen to rap 24/7 are somehoe less "black". this is rediculous. both myself and some f my blk friends listen to all kinds of music. i love country, pop, r and b, hiphop/ rap, all kinds of rock, foreign music (mostly latin music), broadway, oldies, etc. and i just want to make one thing clear: RAP MUSIC IS NOT THE ONLY MUSIC THAT PORTRAYS NEGATIVE IMAGES TO SOCIETY. ironically, as with everything else in our world, the music of minority groups seems to attract the most attention. oldies rock groups like the beatles pioneerd the whole drugs plus music = freedom concept and actually encourged using drugs and sex a lot during the later part of their career and this trend continues in all genres. i think that society likes to be ignorant and generalize certain characteristics with minorities so they can simplify cultures and people. what do you think? in your opinion do you stereotype most blk ppl as listening to rap or urban music?

Why not? Lots of white girls listen to R&B and hip-hop.

That's because it's the music of our generation. Our parents can't pick on country or even rock because they listened to the same stuff and probably still do, but you can bet none of them ever listened to rap when they were in high school. This isn't racism, it's the older generation complaining about the younger generation, just like they always have. It's the circle of life.

And about black people listening to rock--I don't really care whether they do or not. But just something to think about: What do people think when they see a white person who listens to rap or urban music?

The wonderful thing about music is that is HAS no colour.

I personally don't stereotype anyone listening to any type of music, but I think that some people may because most of the successful artists that perform Urban music are black. Maybe that's why they think that???? Food for thought.

And it wasn't the Beatles that promoted drug use, it was as usual the media who decided that once they found out that some members smoked pot to blow it all out of proportion and say that their songs etc promoted it. So the Beatles (who always had a sense of humour about this stuff) in the end sort of played along.

There were other artists that were around long before them who used much harder drugs and sang about it. It was very prevalent in the jazz scene.

Hope this helps a bit.

I love rock music and all music for that matter. But you are so right I've been looked at strange when I say I like the Killers, or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they think just because I'm black all I like is rap and hip hop. I'm suppose to be a hard core Jay-Z and Tupac fan. But that's just how some people think I suppose.

I think people listening to the music they love is always great. I'm white, and when I think of black people and music... I think of going to see B.B. King when I was in high school... and Jimi Hendrix, and of course all the great old jazz artists. I mean, I know rap is something important to some black people, but it's not the only thing they've contributed to the world of music.

I am Black and in my 40's. I have listened to rock music since the 70's.
My favorites are AC DC and Aerosmith. I will turn up the radio in my car with a good rock song on and the windows down screaming it out of tune and don't care who knows.
I also listen to several other types of music.

I grew up in Detroit. Imaine that!

A lot of my friends think I'm crazy because I listen to music of all genres, and music that isn't even in English. To them, I'm less Black. But to me, it only proves that I can accept music for what it is. If something has a good beat, or good lyrics, or a good arrangement, then I can appreciate that. I hate stereotypes.

I think that since music transcends all barriers and flows pretty much like water for our ears, anyone can choose what they prefer to listen to. Also, to categorize Blacks as listening to rap music is false as well. We have been listening to music ages before rap's inception. Furhtermore most rap is purchased by White kids, not Black kids.

i hate rock with a passion..but i dont consider every black person that listens to it to be a "white person". i personally am the biggest fan of hip-hop & rnb.but if people want to put u down by the type of music you listen to, then i really feel sorry for that person. dont get caught up in the hype of what others think.
