The Crusades as we know them were a series of wars aimed at reconquering the Holy Land. While we may think of them as distinct and separate military actions,they were in fact, one long war spread over several hundred years. What we term, Crusade, was called" Taking up the Cross" in those days and was mainly motivated by religious fever. It is true that some nobles did go for personal gain, but, most went seeking forgiveness of their sins and a path to Heaven. The Jews did not initiate the wars or gain from them ,as they were often as persecuted by the crusaders as was Muslims. It is interesting to note that some crusaders did fight on the side of the Muslims against other crusader states and some Muslims fought for the crusaders against other Muslims.

In short:
The Crusades were a series of military conflicts of a religious character waged by Christians from 1095-1291, usually sanctioned by the Pope in the name of Christendom, with the goal of recapturing Jerusalem and the sacred "Holy Land" from Muslim rule and originally launched in response to a call from the Eastern Orthodox Byzantine Empire for help against the expansion of the Muslim Seljuq dynasty into Anatolia.
The Crusades in my own opinion were one of the most unforgivable events in Christianity's past. There were several. To learn about them all go to my source!

**********The First Crusade************

Pope Urban II (1088-1099, see art below) was responsible for assisting Emperor Alexus I (1081-1118) of Constantinople in launching the first crusade. He made one of the most influential speeches in the Middle Ages, calling on Christian princes in Europe to go on a crusade to rescue the Holy Land from the Turks. In the speech given at the Council of Clermont in France, on November 27, 1095, he combined the ideas of making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with that of waging a holy war against infidels.1

**********Other Crusades**************
There were seven major Crusades.
The era the Crusades the first began in 1095 with Pope Urban II's famous speech and the ended in 1291 when Acre, the last of the Latin holdings in Palestine, was lost. The major Crusades were:
the first,
1095-1099, called by Pope Urban II and led by Peter the Hermit, Walter the Penniless, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin and Eustace of Flanders, and others (see also first crusade);
the second,
1147-49, headed by King Louis VII who was enlisted by Bernard of Clairvaux, was a disastrous failure, including the loss of one of the four Latin Kingdoms, the Duchy of Edessa;
the third,
1188-92, proclaimed by Pope Gregory VIII in the wake of the catastrophe of the second crusade, which conducted by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, King Philip Augustus of France and King Richard "Coeur-de-Lion" of England;
the fourth,
during which Constantinople was sacked, 1202-1204 (see also fourth crusade);
the fifth,
which included the conquest of Damietta, 1217-1221;
the sixth,
in which Frederick II took part (1228-29); also Thibaud de Champagne and Richard of Cornwall (1239);
the seventh,
led by St. Louis (Louis IX of France), 1248-50; 3

After the Normans had settled in France and conquered England, both France and England, and also the Holy Roman Empire, were stronger than they had been since the time of Charlemagne. Their kings and queens began to think, as he had, of reconquering the whole Mediterranean and recreating the Roman Empire. In particular, they wanted to take Jerusalem, the city of Jesus Christ, away from the Islamic Fatimids who were ruling it.
ClermontIn 1095 AD Pope Urban made a great speech at Clermont (CLAIRE-mant) in southern France, where he urged the people to take up weapons and go fight to free Jerusalem from the rule of the Fatimids. People were wildly enthusiastic. Even children and old women and old men wanted to go.
..........................................................
All of the crusades were basically for the purpose of regaining control of Jerusalem and restoring power to the Roman Empire and removal of the Muslims from the Holy City of Jerusalem.

The Crusades is the name given to a series of military expeditions, which spanned the eleventh to the thirteenth century, organized by western Christendom to recover the holy land of Palestine from the Muslims.
