He hits .300 almost every year, has 40 + homeruns and 120 rbis. As far as defense, hes not a 3rd baseman, hes a shortstop. He was a mulitple Gold Glove winner before he went to the Yankees and switched positions and when he signed that huge contract he was without a doubt the best shortstop in the league.

At the time he got that contract, he was still very young and regarded as perhaps the best all around player in MLB. His agent, Scott Boras, is the best in the biz at getting his clients outrageous sums of money. Don't look now, but they're talkin' 5 years, 80 mil for Carlos Zambrano.

The year before he signed with NYY, he hit 57 home runs. The Rangers thought he was gonna be their savior, but his amazing stats did nothing. The Yanks traded for him only for the playoffs. They know they will make the playoffs, they just need A Rod to help win the ring.

Because he is good. He is 31 and almost has 500 home runs. I am not a yankees fan i am a cardinals but it is the truth he is one of the best players in the MLB.
