iv always like the old, potasium and acid... but yea big bang glass shattering not a good idea... how about making a life size model of earth... failing that :|...
get a cup, roll a peice of paper and put it in the glass trim the excess, now place a seed between the glass and paper so you can see it through the glass. water it antill it breaks the seed and when the shoot comes out rotate the seed and watch how the shoot changes direction to keep looking at the sun. a large seed is best

they can make salt rocks. all you need is a piece of string, cup full of colored water, lots of salt,a pencil, window sill with a lot of sunshine, and patience.
tie string around the middle of the pencil and suspend it over the cup filled with colored water and salt. and put it near the window sill for a few days and watch the salt grains adhere to the string.
