I'm from the area. Restaurants I recommend
seafood: bill's seafood, lenny and joes, westbrook lobster
italian: luigi's or stella d'oro
mexican: do not go to cuccoo's nest, management is very arrogant
I dont know if where you stay matters but I actually stayed at the days inn in oldsaybrook last month with my boyfriend (it was our anniversary) and we had this incredible room. it was their jacuzzi suite and my bf set it up before hand with rose petals, candles and the whole 9 yards. but what we got for the price is amazing compared to what the resort hotels in the area were charging for anything remotely close.
fenwick in old saybrook is nice by saybrook point with the ct river.
i dunno what your into really. essex has some nice shopping esp if your an antiquer, they have the rail road station that has thomas the tank engine (don't know when)....what you looking for? ohhh CLINTON CROSSING and WESTBROOK FACTORY STORES for SHOPPING!!

say hi to my brother who lives in essex!! jk
anyways, I love Connecticut, especially southern along the CT river. I go there every summer, and everywhere that you're going to be going.
So Essex has this cute little town center with little shops. it's really cute. and the little houses are so adorable. they're very new england-y.
Old Lyme has great scenery.
and Old Saybrook is more of a regular town. It's got a main center with stores. it's got a starbucks, and a walmart, and a marshalls.
have fun!!
