I am a junior in high school and I am having trouble on what to major in college. I've had an interest in architecture since I was about 10 years old and tried my best to improve my math and science skills(improved greatly to A's and B's). Now in high school I have taken a Drafting/CAD course and I am planning to take Precalculus and Physics. Although my school counsler recently told me that it is going to be difficult for me to major in architecture because I have not taken any art classes. This made me think of other careers, I thought of computer engineering because of my skills with computers (also taking a computer engineering class). This has made me very confused on my future.

Can someone please help me on what career to choose or reply with other careers that would fit me best.

P.S- Computer graphics, engineering, and architecture is something that really fascinates me, so a career involved with this would be great

First of all, don't listen to that counselor because they have no idea what they are talking about. You don't need to have taken an art class in High School to major in Architecture. If you want to be an Architect then become an Architect.

Not taking a high school art class will not prevent you from getting into an Architecture program or make getting a degree in Architecture harder. I doubt there are many high school art classes that cover Architectural Design, Theory, History and process flow.

What you need to be doing is making sure that your GPA is as high as you can get it. Making sure that you understand and do well in Calculus and Physics, if you do decide into going into engineering because you will be using this a lot.

I would also suggest you contact a university with an Architectural Program and contact the head of the program and ask them what you need to get prepared for going into their program and see if there are any organizations or extracurricular activities you can get involved in for Architecture.

A word of warning though. Architects need to get their Masters to become an Architect and the pay is not that great compared to Engineers. But that decision is up to you. Do what makes you happy.

what about architecture interests you? I think if you answer
that-you can determine your career path-Art is just another
skill that can be developed-Dont let taking an art class
deter you from your dreams-anyone can draw, its just
a matter of practice. If I were you, I would spend some time
meeting with some architects after school- find out what
their daily workload looks like-ask a lot of questions, ask
them to give you a "mock' assignment to see how you do
You have plenty of time to get the skills you need- but do
the initial leg work first to find out all you can about the actual job, college experience is SOOOO different
from the real life- Your counselor is half right- art background would help, but I am an Art Director, I come
across hundreds of people that are great on the computer,
but they cannot draw to save their life- good luck to you

If architecture is your first love, then continue to pursue architecture, by all means. I think the math and science are the most important courses for this, and art is a perception that is unique to each individual person, not to a class as a whole.

Art fosters creativity, but I think architecture tempers that by what is currently possible. Architecture includes computer graphics and engineering.

Pursue architecture.

If you want to be an architect -- apply to architecture programs. I imagine that art would help, but don't think it should keep you out of the field.

In the mean time, why not sign up for an art class in your senior year?

You should go with something you have an interest in, otherwise you may end up regretting your choices and/or job. If the question is over art classes, why not take one and see what you think of it. I know our local community center offers classes that are pretty cheap, so does the community college.

Seems like your heart is in architecture. If it`s just because of the art classes you didn`t take,i think you can improve on that in the future. You will be fulfilled if you don`t give up.
It`s too late for me to be one,but that was my dream too.Well i choose other stuff, that did not please me that much. When i see a nice, hard to do,intricate, original, building i see art,and passion.
