i'm not really sure what the average is but when i was in high school and played varsity most of our pitchers were between 75 and 85. mine was 87 but there was a team we played that had a junior that threw a 93 consistently. it just really all depends. at the beginning of the season you're likely to be slower unless you throw all winter.

Depends on the schools, but 90 anywhere is rare. 85 always gets attention and even scouts at least paying attention. I went to a rural school and 80 was about as good as it got. There was only 1 pitcher my senior year, within 100 miles, that could throw 90 and he didn't get drafted. A guy one town over, threw 85 and made it to triple a. My experience is the average ace at a school with 300-600 students hits 70-75, and overall average is in the 60's's. You clearly took notice when a guy was hitting 75 because it was out of the ordinary. Once you faced schools that had enrollment over or near 1000 then you'd see the ace hit 80, but the average was still only low 70's at best for the rest of the pitchers. Everyone everywhere overestimates pitch speeds.

For a very good pitcher around 85-90 extremely good fastballs for varsity players can get up into the mid 90s like 94-95, but average probably low 80s

If you account for all varsity high school programs, I'd say probably 65-75mph for their hardest stuff.

Realize, you hear about HS pitchers throwing 80+ mph, it's unusual. That's why you hear about these very few. If you average all HS pitchers and remember they don't throw with a maximum effort fastball every pitch unless they are closers, then people won't say 80+ mph.

My ex-college roommate pitched in college and he topped out in the 70s.

I'd say less than 1% of HS pitchers top out in the 90s, probably another 10% (that's 1 in 10 or one guy on the entire pitching staff) in the 80s and the rest below.

I really don,t think there is any definitive answer to this question .It all depends on the area of the country ,Population is important, the more athletes you have the greater chance you are going to have someone who can bring it!! I pitched in High school,And I batted against the hardest throwers,In my experience ,It would vary from team to team,I could only estimate the average speed to be about 75 to 85 miles per hr occasionally you would see a freak who would throw 85 to 90,s +

I knew an All-star High School pitcher who threw 85 mph. He was voted best baseball player in the county, and later ended up in the LA Dodger farm system. Never made it beyond Single A ball.
