There are no farms in cities, towns and suburbs, in Iowa or any other state. In Iowa, a good portion of land that isn't developed for business, industry or residences is farmed. The reason: Iowa land is very good for growing things which makes it quite valuable and is usually used either to grow crops or as pasture for grazing. There are wooded areas around river valleys and in certain regions of the state such as northeast Iowa.

Iowa is a great place to live, I plan on retiring there when I do finely retire. It is full of farmland but it has a fair share of cities. Now the cities are not vast like LA or NY but they have museums and a theater that has Broadway shows. The two major ones are Des Moines and Iowa City. Like others have said do a little research and travel to the state before you decide to move there for good.

There is a heck of a lot of farmland, especially in the west and south. You could litererally drive for miles and miles without seeing a car. However, Cedar Falls is a college community and has tons of stores and shops and a mall. It's connected with Waterloo which has even more things (stay away from the east side) and an airport. For culture, your best bets are Iowa City and Des Moines. Both urban cities and have tons of shopping, shows, etc... But if you lived in Cedar Falls proper, you will not be seeing corn and fields everyday. You'll hear about it on the news though!

what do you mean "you hate farms" What kind of person are you? Don't you care about the American farmer who feeds and clothes you? Iowa's main industry is farming. Maybe you should visit a real farm before you make a judgement. Yes its dirty, but the fresh air is great. It's hard work, an ethic you should try. The people are good and honest (mostly), we shy away from crowds and the fast pace of a big city (though there is Des Moines). We welcome you anyway....maybe we can change your life for the better.

I lived in Marshalltown for 23 years. Cedar Falls is heavially influenced by the university of Northern Iowa so there is more culture, entertainment and activities in general there because of the university. However,Marshalltown was quite boring. You will want to take trips to Cedar Rapids and Des Moines whenever possible to get into more of an urban setting.

honestly, Iowa is NOT all farmland, and to tell you the truth, I'm getting sick of people looking down on Iowa as if the only things we do is roll around in the mud with our pigs. I mean, sure, there are farms here but that's not all there is. We do have cities with malls and stores like any other normal state! And we are most definately not boring...I'm only 14 and for me to think that its not boring is saying A LOT...I dunno, weather or not u move here is up to you but I'm telling you, its grrrrrreat!

of course, there's going to be farms everywhere. It's beautiful though. You can live in town or City if you want to stay away from farms, but it's very peaceful around here. it's not boring at all.

Before making a major move, it is wise to take a vacation to where ever you have in mind and check it out for yourself.
