It's really not fair! I've been a bridesmaid twice. The first dress was aqua and the second was banana yellow. (Who does this?!?) And both of them cost me around $150 and will never be seen again. It's funny b/c both times they told me I would not be stuck w/ an ugly dress and they wanted my "input" but then I still end up standing up there feeling like an idiot in a horrible dress. Maybe it's some kind of condition brides-to-be get or something... "Must pick the ugly dress, must pick the ugly dress"
Ugh I cringe at the word bridesmaid now

a) They don't think they're ugly at the time.
b) All bridesmaid's dresses are expensive. Weddings are big business.
c) The bride never wears the wedding dress either. It's just part of life. When do people ever go to fancy parties that need that kind of dress?
d) It's not fair or unfair. It just is. It's probably unfair for companies to charge so much for wedding dresses in general but that's just how it is.

who knows why. most of the reasons stated already are true for the most part. I wore a very ugly sparkly dark fuschia thing to my friends wedding. But my brother's wedding was a whole different ball game. Gorgeous red velvet off the shoulder number like the one in pretty woman that JuliaRoberts wore to the opera. I have worn it many times to parties at the christmas time holidays. But the key with that dress was the the bride didn't care, and i had already helped plann like 4 weddings for friends. So she took my advice.
I now have fresh perspective, so whenever I get married, i will see to it that the girls can wear them again.
Almost all bridesmaid dresses are riduclously expensive.

I had a heck of a time trying to find something for my bridesmaids that they could wear over again.
This was 18 years ago and apparently not much has changed.
The industry probably wants bridesmaids to spend as much money as possible for something thats going to end up in the attic or Goodwill store.

Probably because it is their special day and they want to be the center of attention, not their bridesmaids. I don't think all brides do that though!! I've seen some very nice bridesmaid gowns!!

Because the bride is insecure and wants to make sure none of her friends look better than her. I've got 3 of those damn ugly dresses in my closet along with the ugly dyed shoes to match.

It's the bride's day and she wants to make sure no one upstages her, so she picks ugly dresses for the bridesmaids.

They do it to make themselves look more amazing than everyone else. Sure, they want to have their best friends as bridesmaids but also they want this one day to be their special day. Some people make the mistake of having their friends with big boobs be bridesmaids. You can guess where all the attention will be!
