I frequently delete the "history" list on my computer, because it is a bit of a nuisance.
Is there an way of preventing my PC from creating such a list?

Clear Searches, Stored Passwords
Clear History / Clear Autocomplete

Tools
Internet Options
Clear Cookies
Delete Files (offline)
Clear History
set days to keep pages in history to 0
There is a downside: When you delete cookies, some programs or goodies you downloaded may or may not work, pictures may or may not become X’s the next time you open the file, etc.
It’s your choice to make.

You can also:
Click Contents tab: now click the content tab,
click “enable”
set what you want users to see
click “general”
here, you can set a password
Where it says use autocomplete, click settings
uncheck all the things you dont want your browser to store. This way you won’t have to keep going back and clearing things out.

The best way to stop your computer from "remembering" where you have visited on the net is to modify your web browser to "forget" you surf history automatically or everytime you log off. Depending on your web browser the instruction may be different.
Here is a good site that will give you visual instruction how to stop creating a list of sites you visited.

However if you are concerned about your PC history, downloads and viewed files are still on your PC regardless if you clear your history list. There are another 4 areas where your internet history is stored. So if you worried about someone uncovering it. Check out this site it will show you how to clean everything.

No, you can't keep it from creating a list of daily sites, but as the first answer recommended, click on Tools, Internet Options and at the bottom where it says "Days to keep in History" set that to 0 and it will clear each days' list.

If you are using Internet Explorer click, 'tools', the 'internet options'. on the bottom of the 'General' tab there is an option, 'Days to keep pages in history'. change the days to Zero.

Badda Bing!
If u use another browser, u shoulda specified, sorry.

Good news and bad.
Yes you can set it to not keep a history, unfortunately even with that, there's ways of seeing exactly where you've been.
