The simple answer to that question is greed. And once it was annexed, the sugar barons and the pineapple barons took over, simply taking land and using it for their own benefit. They made millions on the deal, but the native Hawaiian people got nothing. There is a strong movement in Hawaii today to restore their native government and remove themselves from American protectionism. It makes sense economically. Hawaii is such a popular tourist destination that this form of economic support is not going to disappear if they regain their independence.
