Last night my 10 year old asked if she could read in bed until she fell asleep - I said no because she has had a hard time waking up the past 3 mornings. She just confessed, on her own, that she did read even though I said no. What do you think the appropriate punishment should be??

Remeber you're punishing her for disobeying, not reading. Make sure she knows this and ground her from something she enjoys.

I like and agree with some of the above answers...first and foremost, thank her for her honesty. Let her know if she is punished, she is being punished for disobeying, not for reading. I like the idea of sending her to bed earlier or maybe creating a nice quite, comfy spot in your home for her to read.

If it were me, I would discuss the situation with her and not punish her. Help her to realize that if she chooses to stay up late reading, then she still has to get up at the same time and she's only hurting herself by being so sleepy throughout the day. Praise her for her honesty and courage...admitting our 'wrong-doings' is sometimes very hard.
In your discussion, ask her to tell you about what she's reading...that way you may be able to understand why she just can't seem to put the book down and also opens the lines of communication between the two of you. I used to read Judy Blume books all the time and had a hard time putting them down!

My 15 year old son stays up late reading...when I go to wake him (if he turns his alarm off instead of snoozing it) I always use a characters name from his book...the other day it was Romeo...I did a Juliet voice and said, "Romeo, Romeo...you're going to stink if you don't get up and shower Romeo!"

Good luck!

I don't think reading is a bad thing, but you could incorporate it into a punishment. The punishment part could be that she has to get up 30 minutes earlier than normal the next 2 days and can read during that time. The discipline would be the waking up part.

Just send her to bed earlier, right after dinner. My parents did this with me because I used to do the same thing, starting at the age of eight. I was in bed by 7 every night, reading for about an hour to 2 hours before I fell asleep. She's a reader and that's a good thing, she just needs to get enough sleep.

I don't think you should punish her for reading. Although she did disobey you, she was doing something good. Just let her know you appreciate her honesty and make sure she makes it to bed on time.. and stays there.

Oooohhh, reading... dangerous. You should take away her brain. A frontal lobotomy should work great! Since you seem to value obedience over intelligence and honesty, I think that would be the simplest solution. I understand they become amazingly docile once you remove all that pesky grey matter!

i don't think u should punish her for reading, not even if she did it behind your back....it's not like she did something wrong, reading is good! and besides it's very likely she'll fall asleep easier(and wake up more easy for that matter) if she reads a bit before bedtime....=)

I would have a tough time punishing her.Any child that enjoys reading that much......maybe take her books out of her room. That's really all I can think of.

Careful, you want honesty. Give her a pass for telling the truth, this time!
