I've heard it pronounced like "eye-talian" and "it-alian." My co-workers and I are trying to find out the history of the 2 different pronunciations. I've heard many stories on this - i.e., the bottom part of the boot and/or lower-income families pronounce it "it-alian." The upper-class pronounce it "eye-talian." Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

well, in ITALY they speak italian, and their word is not 'italian', it's 'italiano' or 'italiana'. In standard proper italian, italiano is pronounced it-alli-ahna. the initial 'i' is short, like in igloo.

I guess I pronounce it as: 'uh-talian' or 'eh-talian'. I don't know where that fits into this. I NEVER say 'eye-talian'. My grandmother used to say it like that but she was from a Slovak immigrant family.
