kathleen, because it sounds like a very clean cut name and hope that the work ethic goes hand in hand with the name.
and not to be racist, but shaniqua sounds like an african person's name and through my experiences with working with africans, they are lazy and never try to work to their full potential even when they are told to, because if they ever get fired, they can sue for discrimination even if there is proof of their unproductivity.
edit: and no, i am not generalizing. all 5 african american workers where i work practice such poor work ethic day after day. i'm sorry for thosewho are african and qualified, because of these slackers, you will have trouble finding good paying jobs.
edit: lol. i am willing to bet that the people who gave me thumbs down are african. wake up and smell the coffee, even if there are a handful of fully qualified africans, it will not rid you of the stigma that the many others have instilled upon you. this is just reality.

If I were Kathleen or Shaniqua, I would run for the hills and find another job. I can't believe you would put it all down to their name and what it means to you. This is not a place for either one of them to work, I can tell by the hiring etiquette.
I used to work for the telephone company back in 1978. I needed to transfer to another city and the transfer took 10 months. When I finally got hired in the new city, the Chief Operator actually told me that she was reluctant to hire me because my zodiac sign is Taurus! THAT was her explanation for the delay! She said she was hoping I would be an Aquarius because she had better luck with them. She didn't even consider that I was extremely qualified and training to be a supervisor when I put the transfer in.
I lasted 2 months working for that wing-nut and her little freak-show and when I read your question, it all came pouring back to me!
I hope Kathleen and Shaniqua are reading this and take my advice.....RUN!!

In the past I have hired an Aura, a Serenity, a Delene, and a Tina Turner. I have also hired a Lori, a Jane, and a Debbie. Who cares what their name is?
I follow the Nordstrom line of thinking when hiring - "Hire the smile, train for the skills." This means hire someone with the right attitude/personality for your establishment. Attitude/personality can't be taught on the job, but the skills necessary for the job can be.

Most people would trip over the name Shaniqua, (especially if they grew up in a little bumpkin town) so unless she used a nickname like Shane or something, I'd go with Kathleen.

I think I would actually go with Shaniqua myself. Why? One really really bad experience with a Cathy (variation of Kathleen) is all it took.

There would have to be something different about them. One of them would have to be a stronger candidate for the job. If I couldn't decide, I would call in someone else to sit in on another interview that I trusted and was very knowledgeable about the open position.
If they were both that great, I would attempt placing both of them and keeping them in my company.
By the way, I wouldn't care if her/his name was Chancifoofoo. I look for quality in people and what they have to offer.

I'd interview them to determine, who had the better personality. There is no way they could ever have similar or equal personalities. For me, personality would be the quality that sets them apart. I would put them in many different socially, interactive situations to determine how they would react or interact and then go from there.

If they were equal, that's hard in itself. i would go back and find out how many absences they had at the last area of employment or the way they present themselves. i think it's so wrong to discriminate over a name. that leaves alot of us qualified black females out of the job market.
