A woodwind instrument is a wind instrument in which sound is produced by blowing against an edge or by a vibrating reed, and in which the pitch governed by the frequencies of an enclosed air column.
A woodwind is the name of the instrument family. It includes flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, piccallo, saxophone, and a bassoon. You'd name the player based on the instrument she/he played.
Example: Flute=flotist

Originally flutes were wood but thats not the reason.... Woodwinds are instruments that you must blow across something... With a flute it would be the wall inside the tone hole, clarinets, saxophones, etc it would be the reed. With brass you blow INTO something which is why they're different.
