You can choose not to dwell on the things that make you unhappy. If you pay attention to your thoughts you will notice that you keep negative thoughts alive. At least I have been guilty of this.

Sure, people do it every day. Some try to reverse the decision with various substances and/or death defying acts, but they just make thigs worse. There are plenty of people who have been through horrible tragedies, have physical ailments, but they don't let the outside world bring down the strentgh they have on the inside. We acutally decide to let ourselves get angry, sidetracked, distracted and frustrated. We can also choose not to do those things. I suggest catching an episode of "Little People, Big World", and see how much strength and energy that family has, and how they choose not to be unhappy. They are an inspirational family.

Sometimes YES!
In some cases, people tend to be or make themselves feel unhappy for certain reasons, depression, frustration and stuff... As a matter of fact, I don't that to myself sometimes!!!
I put myself in such horrible mood and I feel unhappy about myself 'N the things around me, but then I discovered that I'm the only person who's able to make myself happy, and I'm also the exact same person who's in reach to make myself unhappy by that certain mood I put myself into regarding anything bad that occurred to me, or any nice incident. So basically YES, it is possible that people sometimes make themselves unhappy by their own CHOICE!

For most healthy people, in many instances, it can be a choice. But to be happy at a sad moment may not be a healthy response. If your child died tragically, even if you have spiritual strength and belief that they would be taken to a better place, it's probably not healthy if you feel no loss, no pain.
If your brain is chemically unbalanced, you may be medically depressed. In that instance, I cannot see how one could will oneself to be happy. (This may be similar to the situation with the loss of a close family member... it may be physiological response, not just an emotional response).
But in some circumstances, just forcing a smile has been shown to improve the emotional state of most people. It can work in reverse. And I have tried this and found it works for me.
Peace

A lot of employers prohibit you from displaying happiness on the job. And no, being unhappy isn't completely a choice.

YES. One chooses to be happy or unhappy. Life is about the challenges and finding joy in overcoming challenges. Sometimes we choose to find someone to share our life's challenges but our own happiness is dependent only on our own desire to pursue it.
If you are in a bad relationship, YOU choose to continue with it or work through it but either way....it's your choice.
Bad job? You choose to stay there.
That's what freedom is about. Making YOUR choices. Just remember that there always consequences to your choices and responsabilities.

I think it's a choice, If you wanna be unhappy, simply think of things, stress or people in your life you don't like. Think of painful experiences or something or someone who broke your heart.

I think some people have a natural predisposition for happiness. A happiness gene if you wish. And the same goes for unhappiness.

You can, but it's like telling someone who's never seen under a car that they can just choose to change their own oil.
It takes practice to get it right.
