I completely agree! Belkin is excellent for my small home network (4 computers). It offers both ethernet connections (for desktops) and wireless connections (for laptops and PDAs). I have Comcast high speed internet with this, so my ethernet computers get an LAN speed of 100.0 Mbps, and my wireless laptops get 54.0 Mbps. And all for about $35 at staples. Technology is wonderful!

You don't need a router, just a peer-to-peer LAN cable. It should be as simple as connecting the RJ45 Cat5 connectors into both boxes with the cross-wired peer-to-peer cable.
The software for one computer to recognize another may be another story, but that has nothing to do with the physical connection (or router).
If you have more than these 2 computers on the LAN, then you still don't need a router, a hub-box will do. They make 4 and 8 port RJ-45 hubs for under $30.

It depends on how far you want to transmit, but I've had good luck with my belkin 54MBPS on a DSL connection. I'm sure there is much better equipment out there, but I only paid $30 for mine and it works everywhere in the house.

Dlink is a good option, not many known compatibility issues with Dlink.
Linksysy is another good option.
