All computers behind a router would appear to have the same IP address. You have to capture a specific packet to know which PC inside the network that packet is actually destined for.

In fact, that's why in order to "share" a home broadband connection, one must get a router.

Thus, we can conclude that girl's understanding of the Internet is somewhat lacking. And if she starts accusing people just based on their IP address, she has a whole school of people to choose from.

If she felt she was harassed, she should contact your school's IT team. But if she was just dumped, I'd say let her pound dirt, and if she harasses you, you can report HER to her ISP's abuse unit. It's illegal to make threats over the internet in the US, esp. across statelines. That makes it a Federal crime, really.

It is quite likely that your Internet access is done through NAT, a system by which all computers on a Local Area Network access the Internet through a single gateway machine. The only IP address visible to the machine at the other end of the request is that of the gateway - so yes, all the machines can appear to have the same IP address.

no, no two computers can have the same ip address, the only way someone would be able to send a message from the same ip address as you is if they were using your computer.
