"When in Rome, do as the Romans do." It means to know and follow the customs and behaviors of your guests. If they take their shoes off at the door, you should too. If they greet you with a kiss on the cheek, at least don't flip out. Our ways are not their ways, and unless they are sacrificing kids or cutting themselves ritualisticly, it isn't worth it to embarrass or piss off the locals.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. They will be offended if you do not know and follow their customs.
This is why you take off your shoes when at a home is Asia.
This is why you belch around families who consider this to be a way of complimenting a good meal- they get INSULTED if you didn't scarf it down quickly enough to show appreciation!

When in Rome, do as the Romans

the idea is that if you go to another country you should be willing to accept their traditions, food, etc. In general, you are supposed to follow their customs, whether you agree or not.

It means when you are the guest of someone from another culture you respect their customs and try to assimilate and understand them. This makes it pleasant for all concerned.
