my tub wouldn't hold water so i figured a problem with the stopper. i removed the the face plate (water overflow) and could see the thing - connecting rods? not sure of the correct terms

anyway i pulled up on it because i thought it was all attached to a stopper at the bottem - but when it came out ... no stopper was attached - looks old - probably 25 yrs (age of house).

how do i get the stopper out so that i can buy a new one? the name on the face plate says CENTRAL - never heard of it

tried a coat hangar and got it hooked on something but was unable to pull it up - may have shoved it too far down.

could the stopper be attached to something else that shouldn't come out? the tub drains now and we use a plastic drain stopper - don't want it to clog so it doesn't drain at all

we don't have any way to get behind the tub.
I'll try anything - please help thanks...

The waste and overflow, has a brass bell-like stopper, that drops down to stop the water. If the linkage has corroded off, you will have to use a wire with a small hook on one end. Slip it down the overflow tube, and when you feel the wire go inside the stopper, twist the wire and start pulling up. It will probably take 2-3 tries, but be patient. If that fails, you will have to remove the old waste and overflow, and replace it with a twist and turn, or a toe tap waste and overflow. Good luck!

The stopper looks like a small bucket. It is normally attached to the linkage you pulled out. Only way to get it out now is to cut out an access to the overflow pipe and drain. The overflow tube is probably corroded and the stopper will not likely come up it even if glue works. I realize that this is not what you wanted to hear but thats what you have. Go through the wall at the drain end of the tub or from underneath if possible.

You might be able to get it with a shop vac, or a really strong magnet (unless its brass) If you can touch it with the coat hanger, a wad of strong epoxy like JB weld might work too. Just mix up a glob and try to glue the hanger to it, and leave it overnight.

I just hooked my fingers down in mine and twisted till is finally completely came unscrewed. Have a bucket of hot bleach water right next to you though cause all drains are home to little creepy crawlies that latch on to the dirt and grime that doesn't go down but gets trapped. Remember...righty tighty lefty loosey.
