I was offered a position with a company and am planning to take it. I would like to give a two week notice to my current company.

I would like to give my managers a 2-3 week notice to accommodate any projects that I need to finish up or prepare. However, one of my managers is very, very moody and even though we get along pretty well, she will probably have some resentment towards me if I leave. The reason I say this is because another employee recently gave their notice and left the company, and my manager was very cold to this person their last couple of weeks and ignored. Also, I am in a specialized field in which it may take several months to find a qualified replacement at my current job, which may really upset her even more.

What is the best way to approach a manager who is like this? I live in California and have "at-will" employment. I'm afraid to approach my manager and don't want my last 2 weeks to be full of tension & drama.
Thanks!

You don't have a choice - you have to tell her. If she gets moody on you, that's too bad. You'll live.

Telling her boss would be a bad idea. I can pretty much guarantee that the first thing her boss would do would be to tell your boss. After all, she'll need to start looking for a replacement right away, no? If she hears about your departure from someone other than you, she'll be twice as nasty as she'd have been otherwise.

Just tell your boss. If she gets moody, then you can tell her boss about that.

You can not control how someone acts, but you can be professional. Know in your heart that no matter what, you did the right thing by offering a two week notice. NEVER burn any bridges in the business world. Give your proper notice, keep giving your job your very best until the minute you leave, and hold your head up. Remember, your manager my seem distant or resentful because she will miss you and your good work.

People come and go all of the time. You have to look out for number 1. It may be a little weird for the rest of your employment with this company but do what is best for yourself. Give him/her the notice, explain where you are coming from, and work your hardest till your last day.

I just went through the same situation about a year ago, and have no regrets. Good Luck!!!

I was in this exact same situation a little while ago. Turn in your notice asap, and then just be as professional as possible. You might have to grin and bear these last couple of weeks, and if she gripes about having to find a suitable replacement, just offer to help in any way you can. And don't use her as a reference. =) There's no way around this, I think everyone goes through it at some point, but it's only 2 weeks and it sounds like you're being more than accomodating.

Give the notice. What do you care if the manager is cold over the next two weeks? You are out of there.

If you give notice I can guarantee your last 2 weeks will be filled with drama. Why do you the think the boss would treat you any differently? You don't have to give 2 weeks. Just call up on Monday & say "I'm not coming back."

In 5 years no one is going to care in case you left with out giving word, in spite of the fact that that's the courteous element to do.
