Totally not sure where to start. Does it cost money to put google ads on my site? Are the ads auto-generated according to my sites content?

Adsense is what you want. They are the adspace Google will pay you (maybe) to place on your page. The way you get paid is (maybe, and if your site is well-traveled enough) by money generated by the advertisers in the adspace placed on your site. When you join the adsense program, Google gives you an "account" and some javascript code to add to the html of your website. The ads displayed are based on the content of the page in which the javascript is placed.

The other corresponding program is Adwords, which is where advertisers (whose ads appear in your Adsense space) pay for "clicks" occur out of your Adsense ads. Google of course takes a cut of the clicks money and then pays you the rest, on a regular basis, through your Adsense account.

Try searching for "Google Ad-Words". It will take you to Google's ad site. You don't have to pay for the ads; Google just puts up ads related to the content on your website. You must be 18 to do it, however. If you're not, then you're outta luck unless your parent will put it in his or her name.
