well I guess money talks. Be that as it may, it was considered an accidental drowning since water was found in her lungs.
It is the same way Laura Bush did not do any time for the death she caused when she was a teenager.

Besides having enough money to buy off all the right people, the Kennedy's knows a lot of dirty secrets, and could easily blackmail anyone who tried to prosecute them. Even if they can't coerce the people directly working on the case, they can find someone up the pecking order who has something to hide, and intimidate him. Soon, the case mysteriously is ordered closed. End of story.

Ted Kennedy is not the only one of the Kennedy clan who has been in trouble. A couple of the cousins were accused of rape, and although the cases looked substantial, they never went anywhere.

The Kennedy's also practice quite imaginative book keeping, which made their taxes as low as the common household. Pay your fair share? Nothing like liberal hypocrisy.

The circumstances were never sufficiently clear to establish that a crime had been committed. After a party, Kennedy was driving back roads, and missed a bridge; the car went into the water, and the passenger, one Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned. It was certainly negligence on Kennedy's part, and it is likely that he was sufficiently under the influence that he should not have been driving, but that did not make for a strong enough case to be prosecutable.

Lots of rumors and theories -- very few known facts. Most people figure the Kennedy family's political muscle kept a lot of stuff from getting out and Ted from doing any time.

Wonder what the outcome would be if this happened today?

Plenty of documentaries on Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick. Try reading one. You'll find that local small town law enforcement wasn't up to their job and they were afraid to take on the power of the Kennedy clan.

You might also try "The Dark Side of Camelot" which documents how dirty ALL the Kennedys were, and how they all abused their political power, including JFK. This was written by a Pulitzer prize-winner.

He is a Kennedy and a politician in a strongly democratic state. Only Teddy knows the truth. You are right most people would have spent jail time for what he did. He however was elected to congress. At the very least his actions showed him to be unable to function under pressure. Those who claim to 'know' the facts only know what the media told us.

pretty much the same reason why none of the kennedy's have ever done time for all the women they have beaten, murdred or raped...

and never will do any time for any of those things..

he is a real good liar...and he owns the state,.. I bet he could shoot someone on national TV and get away with it.. you might also look into the taxes they pay.. you will see they pay less than you do.. why... because he doesnt make any money at all.. he gives all his money to charity .. the charity pays all his bills.. and it only has 1 cause... keeping him in wine and women.

No one on here will be able to fully and correctly answer your question or comment.

One of the biggest reasons is that he comes from a family with means and name. Many other lesser of persons would have been skined and put away for a long long time. But when your family knows people and how to know people it does make a difference.

It happened in Mass. which was practically owned by the Kennedy's at the time and he received no punishment. The whole thing was swept under the rug, just like when his nephew raped that woman in Palm Beach, Florida and the other nephew murdered the Moxley girl.
