Take the 101 up or down to Monterey and Carmel. They have the coastal view on 101 and highway 1. The best part of the trip is when you reach the sea in Monterey. Ahhhh!!! The water is relaxing for you and your guest and lots of fun for kids. They have aquariums for kids and all types of night clubs(if your into that) and a ton of seafood restaurants for yourself. Cannery Row is excellent for kids from 2 to 92, you can be a tourist. Lots of shops and candy apples. Favors the famous pier 39 in San Francisco.

Depending where you are from, you should really make it a point to see as much of Cali as you can.
I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and miss the fact that I could be in the Sierra Nevadas or on the Pacific Coast in just hours. I now live in Texas and it is a days drive to the beach and I have no idea where the closests mountains are.

That would depend on what you're into. If you're a nature lover, then a quick trip to Yosemite from San Francisco is a good way to go. If you like the beach, then driving down the coast on PCH would be very nice. If you like adventure, then driving down the Tenderloin district in San Francisco or anywhere in the downtown areas of Oakland and Compton would be very good.

How long have you got?
I drove Bay Area, I80-I5-US101 to Port Angeles, WA then took the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC then headed over on the ferry to Horseshoe Bay and followed the Trans Canada Highway through Glacier NP, Canada to Banff then Calgary, then Glacier NP, USA, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain NP, Aspen CO, Durango CO, Messa Verde NP, Monument Valley, 4-corners, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite and home on the 9th day. 3600 miles or so.
Yosemite NP can be a nice day trip. Crater Lake NP, OR with Lassen NP thrown in is another good one.
I like doing Death Valley and central Nevada (north on Tonopah and south of I80) in a 4x4.
Where are you starting? How adventurous are you? How long have you got?

I definately agree that driving the coast (Hwy 1) is spectacular! Big Sur, Monterey, beautiful. Hwy 101 sometimes goes more inland and you miss the Ocean views.

Bass Lake, you can rent swiss looking chalets, has a loft, stove refrigerator. Very nice and relaxing.
Another favorite get away would be Sonora, that too is a very nice relaxing get away.
Have a great trip!
