I have a 12 yr old daughter who is in 6th grade. A 13 yr old boy has asked her to the movies. I told her i would let her know by the weekend if she could go or not.
My initial reaction is H*** NO!! I feel she is to young.
Am I being to protective? Would you let a 12 year old go on a date??

Go to the movies with them. Your the parent. How do you know the movie is the kind your daughter should watch? Your daughter is to young to go on a date by herself. The 13 year old is still a child also. who is going to take them to the movies. That shoudl be you. Call the 13 year olds parents to see if they are aware of what is going on. Make sure he knows where you stand. He is asking you to let him take out your most precious posession. Make sure you tell your daughter thats what she is too. You would protect this protected possesion with every cell in your body if necessary. Then sit them both down and tell them the same thing together just before you go to the movies with them. There is no compromise and trust has nothing to do with it

I dont think that this is inappropriate at all. I mean, it's a two hour movie, and it's not like they'd be doing the stuff that you are afraid of them doing in a crowded movie theater. There are twelve year olds who are having babys, and so a short date to the movies seems harmless. If you're really uncomfortable with it, maybe the 2 of you can compromise on a group date. Besides, it's probably both of their first dates anyway, so it will probably be 2 awkward for them to really do much anyway.

12 is too young to go on an un-chaperoned date. Maybe you could compromise, let her go if you drive them to the movie, and pick them up when it is over and all of you go out to eat together. That way, she gets some alone time with the boy and you get some time to get to know the boy better.

I wouldn't let a one-on-one date happen - but I would probably allow a "group" event - where there are several kids. I think 12 is too young to officially "date" but I think group activities are healthy for kids at that age.

12 is way to young to start dating as such.

However a group going together would be fine. As long as you know who they are and are people you like and trust your daughter to be around.

I think your right. 12 is TO YOUNG for dateing. Maybe when she is 14 or 15.

I like the "go with sit away from them" idea. Give her a little bit of freedom, but not too much. And this way, if you see anything happening you don't like, you can step in.
