Birds nest in a small birdhouse in that tree every year and I've seen a young black rat snake slithering up to go after the eggs in past seasons. Not wanting to interfere too much in the balance of nature, I'd still like to keep the nesting birds safe in that particular spot. Any tips?

I would recommend you go to your favorite L&G Center and get some Tanglefoot. It usually comes in a tub (like butter) or a tube. It's normally used around the trunk of a tree to keep insect pests from crawling up the tree, like catepillars or ants, for example. But it will also keep snakes away. So you can protect the tree and eggs with this one profuct. It's not poisonous or harmful to you but it's as sticky as can be so try not to get it on yourself.

there are several reasons for this. 1. to make them more visible to people passing, so no one accidentally runs over them. 2. to protect the bottoms from rot and disease. 3. t seal the trunk and allow it to trap more water. 4. in some of these trees, at a certain age, the tops will be cut off and replaced with a different type. (usually they grow black walnuts then replace the top with normal walnuts) this is because black walnuts are indigious to the area, while the tops are not. it helps the tree get the best of both worlds.

Around here, people wrap a piece of sheet metal around the tree trunk to keep snakes out of trees. Use a strip at least 10' wide.
