Fish Pox- The disease mainly is seen in Carp. It has been found among some various aquarium fish. It is thought that fish pox is mainly caused by a species specific virus. Symptoms- The disease begins as small, opalescent white or red spots with a greasy appearance and possibly with streaks of black pigment. These spots stand above the skin about 1-2 mm and gradually increase in size. The spots merge so that large areas of skin are affected. The growths are quite firm to the touch and may take on a reddish grey appearance with time. Treatment- There is no known treatment for this. If the affected fish are kept in clean, healthy surroundings the signs should disappear after 8-12 weeks. They may appear again but this is unlikely with healthy fish warming the water abve 60-65 will eliminate the pox quicker.
Ulcers- Ulcers are open sores located on the fish's body. Ulcers are sores on the body caused by bacterial infection. You need to make very sure your water quality is immaculate. Check your pH and Ammonia as well as your Nitrite readings. Ulcers usually are caused by the Aeromonas bacteria or more rarely Pseudomonas bacteria. The ulceration may appear with red abscesses, or red edges around the ulcer. In some cases it can become rather large and expose muscles. Symptoms: The fish has one or more open sores on its body or at the base of its fins. The sore has a red abscess or red edges. The fish may also have red fin edges or fin rot. They may exhibit lack of appetite and sluggish behavior. Treatment: Usually antibiotics are needed and this is done by a series of injections. ( A vet would need to see the fish and give you the necessary prescription). However this is not always the best option for individuals and a product by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals has a great product called Mela Fix that has shown great results in the healing of ulcers. It is easy to use and does not create issues with the water quality
As always feel free to email me and I can help from there.

My gold fish has this problem often also. Sometimes just changing the tank water will help these to clear up. This is called red streaks, and is described as having "red blood streaks or blotches on the fish's fins or body". This can be helped by using Goldfish Fungus Eliminator or by feeding your fish Goldfish Starter Food. I used the fungus eliminator for my fish, and it helps, but it does turn the water colors. So changing the water might be necessary anyways.

That sounds like Fish Pox. It is not normally fatal although very contagious. You need to check the water for the condition and then add salt. It would probably be better to isolate the fish. The Pox can last for eight to twelve weeks. Good luck! There is no particular treatment for the disease, just good water conditions.

Wow... to be honest right off I can think of 6 potential causes of red spots / lumps on the fins. If there is anyway you can put up a photo of the fish or email me a pic I can try to help you with that, but without lots more info any guess would be just that, a really wild guess. If you can email a picture feel free to send it to magicman116@yahoo.com. I look forward to trying to help.
