Why do roosters crow while hens don't?

Does crowing attract hens to roosters? Does it have any role in their reproduction?

Roosters crow to announce that this is their territory.

If there is no rooster in the farmyard, a dominant hen may take over the crowing duties! Some one has to be the alarm clock.
