what is the process to change a childs name in Texas, if legal father is in prison and has no relationship with child. Is a lawyer required?

Father is in prison , not dead. Obviously, you would have to contact the parents of the child. If a lawyer is required, means that you either cannot file on your own ( no knowledge) or you are not allowed. Most often, people use an attorney because they are assured that they get the best defense or utilize the court system to the fullest. Contact the lawyer of the day at the probate court first and see if you can go pro se which means you are indigent. ( have no money) Then that lawyer has to guide you through the steps and process and you can go forward yourself in court.

Not sure about Texas but in Illinois have to go before a judge and get a court order. There was a case here last week when the children of a man convicted of murder wanted to change their name to their mothers maiden name and the judge granted their wishes. I forgot to mention that he was convicted of killing thier mother.
