As rossenero says bayview is not the safest part of the city. You may want to look for someplace in the Protereo Hill area. It will be close to your work, has lots of resources and is much safer.

If you are looking to do the roommate thing check out the shared living area of craigs list.

I think you shouldn't live in bay view and hunters point unless you're packing lots of heat. it's the ghetto. not like the they'll beat you up ghetto but more like the they'll just shoot you in the head type ghetto.

the outer mission, the potrero, and even the inner mission are all safer. I used to live in the outer mission on geneva and mission street just a little south of bayview and I was able to pay $550 a month for a room in a LOT better neighborhood. you won't have any problem finding roomates anywhere in the city as everyones renting out places and looking for places. you may want to checkout craigslist.

The bay view is one of the (not very many) dangerous parts of San Francisco, which explains why the price you found is lower. Do not stay there. If you can't afford to stay in any other part of the city (also I would avoid civic center), I would look at CERTAIN parts of Oakland which are convenient SF. The chinatown area or lakeshore for example.

If you want list other areas you're looking at, put them in "additional details" and we'll tell you how they are.
