I am currently pregnant with my 6th child, so I think I can answer this one! Of all the births my primary ob was present for only two. The others were whoever was on call, see as many as the Drs in your group as you can so you will get to know each one. In the end the Dr. is only present at the last stage of the pushing phase of delivery, in my case all off about 5-20 minutes. You will find that the most important and involved people during labor and delivery are the nurses, if you can visit the maternity ward so you can meet some of the nurses, they really are the ones who you will depend on most.

I had about 5 or 6 different OBs at my office, they told us to see each for at least 1 appointment since we wouldn't know who would be on call when we went into labor. I had only met with the OB that delivered my baby once or twice, but I will say i had no problems. Honestly, I had been in labor for 13 hours, and for most of that time I just had the nurses, and one or two residents (and the anesthesiologist when i got my epidorual). By the time the doctor came in I had been pushing for almost 2 hours, she literally came in at the end. I didn't worry about being comfortable with the doctor, I think it's more important to have a good nurse and to have someone (a spouse or other family member) there with you for support.
I know I was worried that I would get one of the male OBs and I would be embarrassed (I always made sure appointments with any "invasive" or embarrassing procedures were with a female OB), but honestly when you're there you just want your baby out, I didn't care who the doctor was!

When i was pregnant with my daughter my OBs office had 1 OB and 2 midwives. They said that whoever was on call when i went into labor would deliver my baby. I was lucky and the midwife that i had seen throughout my pregnancy was on call the day i went into labor!
I am almost 32 weeks pregnant with my second child and i go to a different OBs office now. there are 4 doctors and 3 midwives in this office. and again they said it applies here that whoever is on call will deliver my baby, BUT they did say that if a midwife was on call and I had to have a C section or was having problems they would call one of the doctors in the office to deliver.
I am a bit worried about it as well as i am really comfortable with one of the doctors and one of the midwives. The OB office i got too is the largest and has the best reputation in town and i have been so satisfied with them so far. Actually the same doctor that delivered me may deliver my baby!
So calm down and just relax, your in good experienced hands and they will take awesome care of you and your baby! Good luck!

Yes, I go to a practice where there are six different doctors I have to see....unfortunately, they are the only decent OB clinic in the area, otherwise I would really prefer just to see the same doctor. I think seeing multiple doctors can really make things complicated, as each doctor has their own opinions, and every time I see someone, I am told different things. This might be easier if I had been pregnant before, but with a first baby it is just aggravating and confusing. Plus my pregnancy is very high risk, and each doctor seems to have different things that concern them and I have to hear about ALL of them weekly, so it is kind of more stressful on me. One thinks one thing is a huge problem, only to hear the next week that the next doctor isn't worried about THAT problem, they are worried about THIS issue...and so on and so on, until it nearly drives me insane.
On the good side of this though, you really don't have to worry about something getting overlooked when you have several different people reviewing your information on a weekly basis...I think they probably over analyze if anything, so I don't worry that they are missing something in the whole scheme of things. That would be the only real advantage I can see to having a setup like this.
I don't know how they will go about doing your delivery, I know with the setup mine has, you get whoever is on call when you go into labor. The only way you get a particular doctor for sure is if you are scheduled for an induction or c-section. For this purpose, most clinics that have a setup like this will have you rotate who you see so that you don't end up with a doctor you have never seen before or one you barely know. However, they did the same thing to me at first, I saw mainly one doctor, and didn't know the others. Now they are trying to make sure I see everyone at least once or twice before delivery (I still have two I have never seen). I think it is scary to think of having an unfamiliar doctor handle your delivery, when you are comfortable with one doctor in particular. I guess all we can do is pray one we are comfortable with is on duty when we go into labor! Best of luck to you!

My OB's office has 4 other OB's and 2 midwives, and they like us to see all the OB's during our pregnancy just in case our main doctor isn't on call when we go into labor at least they are familiar with us. I've seen them all and am comfortable with any of them delivering my baby. Good luck!

I go to a military hospital as well. I am assigned to one provider for all of my prenatal care, and I have seen him almost every time (unless he is booked, out sick, etc). When I go into labor, I will see whichever doctor is on call. They keep one doctor and one midwife in the labor and delivery area at all times, and a second doctor on call in case they need help. There are a lot of doctors up there that I've never seen, and the chances of my provider delivering my baby are very slim.
I'm not too worried about it, because I've liked most of the doctors I've seen up there and I've LOVED the midwives I've dealt with in labor and delivery (been in twice to be checked after hours). With the way the military hospitals are set up, I am used to being shuffled around from doctor to doctor. If it makes you really uncomfortable, talk to your doctor about it and see what their procedure is. I know that when my mom had us, she went to an OB with multiple providers, but her doctor delivered both of us. Your OB might have some provisions that will help ensure that a doctor you are comfortable with will deliver your child.

I go to an ob office with 4 diff ob's I see the same one each appaintment, but it just depends on who is on call when I go into labor as to who will do the delivery. With my first child I saw mainly the same doc at each apt. but when it came time to deliver it was one of the doc's that i had never seen before, everything went fine and it actually turned out to be a positive experience.

If you go to an OB with a partner or more, if your doctor is not available his or her associate will care for you. What is great is they will have access to all you records therefore will be well abreast of any particular situations.
I have two children and had different OBs with each pregnancy. With my first birth, I went into labor on Labor Day and had an emergency c-section. I never saw my OB but was at ease with his partner because he knew more about me than a "stranger". At my 6 week checkup, my OB was confident w/ his partner's work. With my second, a planned c-section allowed me to have my OB present yet his partner checked on me during his rounds as well as my OB.

My OB office has 4 docs and you are required to see each doc at least once so that you will be familiar with each of them prior to delivery. You should ask your OB office's policy on who will deliver your baby. If it is whatever doc is on call that day, I would ask to be able to see each doctor for an appointment before the baby is born so that you feel more comfortable about your delivery. That could be one less thing to stress or worry about. Good luck!!!

My OB office has 8 different doctors in it. I ended up being induced & being able to do it on the day that she was on call, so I was lucky. But I had another dr. check on me afterwards & a different one still discharge me. I didn't have any problems with any of them. I did worry though, don't get me wrong. I think by the time you are in labor, that is the last thing on your mind. :) Hope this helps! Good luck!
