start with the last digit of the vin, and count back 8 (so the 8th to the last number) that will be the last digit of the model year. so for example, a 2007 will read 76543211 or a 1995 would be 56789123. You have to have a general idea of the time period. As long as you know what decade, you can find the year out that way.

Check out an online source for general info - such as google or wikipedia....
but there is a letter code in the VIN that represents the year...
this only when into effect in the 80s with the advent of the 17 character VIN.
FROM ABOUT.COM -
Find Your Truck or Car's Model Year
Beginning in 1980, all vehicles sold in the United States have a 17-digit serial number. The eighth digit from the right end identifies the model year of the vehicle.
Knowing the designation for each model year will help you as you shop for a truck. It's an easy system to remember--just make a few notes before you go out to buy.
Years 1980 through 2000 are designated by a letter from A to Y.
The letters I, O, Q, U, and Z are not used because they can be easily confused with a number or another letter.
A – 1980
B – 1981
C – 1982
D – 1983
E – 1984
F – 1985
G – 1986
H – 1987
I – not used
J – 1988
K – 1989
L – 1990
M – 1991

T – 1996
U – not used
V – 1997
W – 1998

Call any GM dealer parts dept. and give them the VIN code--I believe the 10th digit/letter from the left is for the year but you'll need to know what letter corresponds to what year it is ...i.e. a=80 b=81 c=82 etc.
or try this site http://www.nytmare.org/fiero/vin/decoder.htm
may be helpful. Paul

Go to carfax.com and enter the number. Don't pay to see the results but it tells you what the car is and what year it is. Plus it will give you an idea of how many issues the car may have. Good luck
