Parents have the right to name their child anything they want just as long as it is within reason. Plus, most kids will have nicknames growing up so no big deal.
If anyone ever gets critical with you about how you named your child remind them that when they have kids they can pick whatever name they want and if they already have kids or had kids tell them that they already made their choice of a name and what you name your child is none of their business. For those that do not have children or don't want any thank them for their opinion and advice and move on. If people have nothing better to do then do exactly what they are warning parents about what other children may do, then you know where these kids are learning how to criticize and tease other children.
Be happy with the name you pick for your child and love them always, whether they are Apple, Hazel, Julie or Madison. You gave your child that name with love.

They have that right as the law stands now. Though why they would want to go Unique (read: strange) I don't exactly know, if it's obvious that this will become a problem for the child, I'd consider that very selfish of the parent.
I always try to keep in mind that I as parents only "have" them for 18 years, they still have to live with the name for, hopefully, another 50 years or so unless of cause they go through the trouble and have their name changed.
I would definitely listen to others and then take the advise that makes sense to me and discard the rest.
I come from a country where there are limitations on what you can name your child... believe it or not the rules are there to protect the child not to make life difficult for the parents, I know that is very American but you know in 99.9% of cases this presents no problem at all.

Yes, unfortunately.
I think the problem with this is that the parents do not take into consideration how this name will effect them. If it's dorky, they will be made fun of. If it's too trendy, such as Apple, Blanket, or Grape, it sucks. LoL How will that name carry them into adulthood? Hi, I'm VP of a huge company, my name is Apple Somethingorother. Come on now. Nobody is going to take that seriously.
I think you should thoroughly think these things through! Just my opinion though, thanks for the 2 points!
*I just wanted to revise this and let everyone know that I am happy you can name your kids what you want. I just wish some people would think it over!*

Of course they can name their children anything they want. Doesn't matter how stupid it sounds to anyone else. They gave birth to the child and they can name it anything they want.
I couldn't tell you what country, but it seems that I read that a certain country could turn down names on birth certificates. I personally think it is the parents decision, even if everyone in the world thinks it's a stupid name, every parent has their rights.

Yes they do. Unf, some people don't take this very seriously! I think as long as you lovingly name your precious child, it does not matter what anyone else thinks. If you give your baby a silly or stupid name and don't love it or care for it, there are bigger issues than just the name of the child!
If your child does not like the name as they get older, let them pick a nickname, or explain why you chose that name. They may learn to like it if they learn what makes that name special to you. (And make sure they know that just because other people might make fun of their name or not like it does not mean they have to feel that way! They should be proud of who they are!)
Good question!

Yes they do. It's their problem if their kid is made fun of in school with a weird name. Most people think they are being clever by giving the kid a weird name or spelling it differently, but don't realize that the kid has to grow up with that name.

Yes but parents beware! Your child has to live with that name, however freaky it is, until they are old enough to change it. Some names are just plain horrible and hopefully these parents have a lot of money for counseling set aside. It is your choice as a parent but think of the whole picture.

Damn rights they do!!!! I named my daughter Pandora and my son Staven. Lots of people don't like those names but some do. I myself have a very common name. I found it very annoying in school because 3 other girls in my classes had the same name. I think unique names are better. Who wants to be like everyone else anyway???

of course they do. its their kid they dont have to listen to what anyone else is saying. i mean they arent having their friends kid for example. and they should tell whoever it is that doesnt like the name that when they have kids they can decide on a name but the child in subject is not really their business.
