The modem is what picks up the signal from the cable (or DSL) line and sends it to your computer. But before it will work, the cable (or DSL) company has register the modem with their service. If you were to purchase and install your own modem, it would not work. You first have to purchase the service from the cable company. They will supply you with a modem when they do that. If you decide to switch to your own modem after that, you would have to have them reconfigure their service to work with your modem.

So before purchasing a modem, contact the cable (or DSL) company and they will take care of it for you.

a modem 'dials into' a computer at your internet provider and they 'pickup' the call what is transmitted sounds like high pitched screams. Its actually information in the form of audio. later its transmitted as a lower signal and is modulated (encoded) your mod(modulator)dem(demodulator) or modem is meant to decode it on your side and bring out actual info your computer can use and form a web page or anything else from.

Hope this helped.
