Haven't you heard about the scams? Take the check to your bank and ask the President or a bank officer to check the availability of the funds in that account. You will probably find that the check is a fraud. Never cash a check or deposit it until you verify that the funds exist. Always ask your banker to cash the check and deposit the money in a special account until the check clears. Once the check clears then it's yours. If it doesn't clear, the bank isn't out any money. The banks have been willing to help weed out these illegal scams by doing this for several people we know. We had suggested they do this and the banks then worked with the FBI and other organizations when the checks didn't clear. You need to know, though, that just like illegal immigration, the FBI won't prosecute unless the check is over the threshold. I can't remember whether the threshold was $15,000 or not. I do know that the threshold was over $6,000.
You've been scammed! Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Yep, classic scam. I've received these things from Canada, the UK, Germany, Spain (I've never even been to Spain), Nigeria, Russia, etc.
Did you ever enter a Lotto in Canada? If not, then how would you win it?
The scammers may have your bank information -- close that account DOUBLE QUICK before it is drained of all money. Did you tell them anything over the phone? Your identity may be stolen already -- contact your credit bureaus double quick and report the scam!

Man Sorry to hear that. You'd think the bank would have checked w/Canadian Athourities before cashing that check.
There are alot of forign "lotteries" that are fake, if you get anything foriegn you should bring it to the bank manager before doing anything w/it.
You should also go to the insurance company you gave the money to w/the info from your bank stating the check was fake. Are you sure this insurance company wasn't in on the scam? Maybe you should just get ahold of local P.D and inform them of your situation. Yeah, do that in case insurance was in on scam.

The rule of thumb for scams is if they contact YOU, it is a scam. If you contact them initially, it is probably legit.
Close your bank account and set up a new one. You just learned an expensive lesson.

at least you deposited it in a bank! i work for a place that cashes cheques, if you tried to cash it we'd have you arrested and then you would have to explain to police for hours why it wasnt your fault. the best thing is to ignore anything you've won that you didnt enter!
