Hello,
Yes, it is ok to feed Piranhas minnows, however if they are red breasted Piranhas they will lose their colors eventually. The best thing to feed them is small feeder goldfish or if they are a larger fish, go with larger goldfish.

I had a pair of Piranhas for 5 years and learned the hard way because I did feed them minnows until they lost their color and had to wait for about 6 months for their color to gradually return. I too thought as one of your other answers was posted, they eat them in the Amazon and they are cheaper to buy, but they do end up destroying your Piranhas over a period of time. It is also said that you can feed them raw hamburger, which is true, but ONLY give them what they will eat in no longer then 5 minutes because the grease will destroy your tank and it is very hard to get out, and you will end up losing your fish because it will leave bacteria in the tank if you do not get it all out.

Good luck with your Piranhas, as they are beautiful fish!

Yep, perfectly all right to do that, that's one or their foods in the wild and they aren't very far removed from the wild fish. Another thing they will usually eat quite well is fish filets. Try getting some that are almost out of date or just one day past the sale by date at the grovery store. They will usually cut you a deal if you explain why you want them. I would suggest sticking to white fish filets though.

Piranhas are fresh water fish so you can feed then any fresh water fish. Silversides can be fed as well. Tuffies or commets are also good. Make sure to use a variety. You may also want to get some algea flakes so minerals are available too.

What do you think they eat in the Amazon? If they can't eat minows, I don't know what they can eat.
