and we need a place close to Iran, like Iraq, to keep peace in the Middle East and we can take down a dictator at the same time, would the Senate have bought it and would more liberals have gone along with it?

Danny you are right we are still in Germany, Korea, and Japan... It should be a no-brainer.

i think more people, liberals, conservatives, everybody, would support the war and the occupation if the govt was honest from the beginning. we do need to be in the middle east, in iraq, for the safety of the rest of the world. to intimidate Iran, to try to foster some form of democracy, to protect the oil and to protect Israel. the govt should just admit that the US military will be there for several generations.

No, I think the cowardly Liberals would have derailed it. The mere mention of getting a military foothold in an area scares them. They think we are turning imperialistic.
