Nobody mentioned them yet,but the Gibbs brothers ( B gees) are one of the most successful song writing partnerships ever. Not my cup of tea, but there you go.

As the others have said, Lennon & McCartney.
Going back a bit, Gilbert & Sullivan, Satchmo, George Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein, Steven Sondheim, Jerome Kern, Lieber & Stoller, Goffin & King, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Nillson, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa (Wot?)
A bit more up to date, Michael Franti, Eminem, Dr Dre, Tupac Shakur, Ani Defranco, Half Man, Half Biscuit and last but not least, Bob Marley!
Shake that funky booty!

In the rock arena, I love:

Dylan
Lennon & McCartney
Nick Drake
Morrissey
Neil Young
Bob Marley
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry

But don't count out the real "old school"
Irving Berlin
Cole Porter
George & Ira Gershwin
etc.

Look up some of their lyrics, listen to their songs - beyond cleverness into the sublime.

im gonna go for cat stevens. you've got all the best singer songwriters from our time from that era so just look for seventies stuff, although anyone who writes and sings their own thoughts in public deserves respect despite peoples certain opinion on it
