I would like to know more about it. All I know is that it begins on their calendar in the year 2012.

The Mayans had three different calenders and they all align on 12/21/12. According to them, that's the end of this world. However, their belief system included the belief that the earth goes through cycles and has been through 3 or 4 already (I can't remember exactly). So, they taught everything will be destroyed in this era but it will start a new one. Each one has been destroyed by separate reasons. I.E.-the last was destroyed by water (flooding-?) This one is to end by fire.
Jesus ushered in the Age of Pisces (the fish, he called his disciples fishers of men, etc) and I think the Age of Aquarius was supposed to officially start in 1969. I'm not very sure where anyone gets those dates but astrology/astronomy might know.

The Mayans didn't have the same constellations as us, and therefore wouldn't recognize Aquarius or any of our zodiac signs/constellations.
However, some people who are NOT Mayan think the Age of Aquarius may correspond to the energetic changes currently happening due to the galactic alignment on 12-21-2012 (which, due to the slowness of precession, we are technically already experiencing). This alignment "officially" happens on 12-21-2012, which is the first day of Baktun 13 of the Mayan Long Count calendar. (NOT, as others have said, the end of the calendar, of time, or of the world.)
BTW, the Mayans had more than 3 calendars and they aren't "aligning" in particular on any day, much less 12-21-2012.

Official status of the Age of Aquarius:

No astronomical organization or official body has agreed upon a specific date to begin the Aquarian Age.
No world body has recognized the spring equinox of the year 2000 AD as the start of the Age of Aquarius.
No Congress has convened, no consensus taken and no agreements have been made on how to administer the Age of Aquarius.
Most people are taking a wait and see attitude as if the new age were a Wheel of Fortune.
