They were being pretty clever about it if you ask me. Every tape they showed of the detainees showed them talking, laughing, smiling, eating, etc. It showed that they were in good spirits and being held in acceptable conditions. Contrast that with the US abduction of 5 Iranian diplomats who have not been seen or heard from since Jan. 11. Who knows which secret prison they have been shipped off to and what conditions they are being held in. So in the act of detaining the spies in a humane manner AND releasing them (even without our releasing their diplomats) they are showing that they have the moral high ground relative to the United States.

Edit: LOL to the poster who said that the "libs must be disappointed", it seems you wingnuts were the ones who were disappointed that you didn't get to start yet another bloody fiasco that would kill even more Evil Brown People (tm).

I agree with Alan s, no one has come out of this looking like they have backed down under pressure, Iran's leader obviously realized that this was going escalate way beyond what he wanted to achieve and there was also pressure from the Russians, lets just be grateful that these people have been released and are hopefully coming home soon, I dread to think what the Americans would have done if it had been their people, and what military blunder Bush would have pushed the region and the world into.

I'm sure this was the plan all along. If a bully is threatening you everyday, at some point you 'bump into him' and give him his chance to 'put up or shut up'. Iran has been either controlled or bullied by the U.S. for 50 years.
They deliberately provoked the Brits and U.S. to see the U.S. back down from a fight. I'm sure they feel it was successful. They kicked the neighborhood bully in the shin, and the bully walked away from a fight.

Nope I think they proved their point ...

1) US/UK cannot run the middle east as they thought
2) Iran now runs the middle east by proxy
3) you cannot stop the Iranian/Syria/Hizbollah machine.

As of right now, Iran/Syria/Hizbollah is clearly running the middle east.

Without having to constantly be on the whim of war against Iraq, Iran is now running the show.

I think they (Iran) felt like they won some world sympathy because they forced the British to apologize. Iran likes to play a lot of psychological games and they think that it works when it comes to world opinion. It kind of does work in a way but this time, everyone could see how messed up and ridiculous this hostage system truly was.

only 7% of the Britts wanted to go to war. Iran could have kept them a long time if they wanted.

The British people are seeking to apease radical Islam. They removed teaching about the Holocost from the schools and the Crusades since it is counter to Islam.

Perhaps Iran could email the next threat to them

Iran had nothing further to gain and releasing them like they did will fuel their propaganda machine for some time. Plus, everyone saved face the way they did it. everyone wins nobody loses.

Well, of course they did! That's why they released them. They've got to spin it with something that will save face for them. Cut them that much of a break.

You gotta feel bad for the libs, though. How disappointed they must feel realizing that this situation was nothing more than what we've been saying all along--a kidnapping of British sailors from international waters--and not a conspiracy between Blair and Bush to attack Iran. Liberals proven wrong! It must be tough for them right now.

Geez, lighten up. The soldiers were released, and you're upset with what Ahmadinejad said?!?!? Are you one of the conservatives who complain about the PC police, too?!?

Ahmanidejad is an *******. He knows that if he didn't give back those soldiers, England would've taken action.
