I don't think so. But then again, I'm rubbish at putting bands into genres.
I think of emo bands as being young - like, late teens/early 20's - whiny boys mostly. The songs are about relationships gone wrong, being over the top about this fact, and how bad their life is. A typical example would be Hawthorne Heights. That's what a lot of people think of as emo now, I think. Emo = self pity, in my mind.
My Chem don't really fit this. Yeah, they sing about death a lot, but if people'd pay attention to the lyrics they'd know that they're not as depressing as they seem at first. They're more about remembering loved ones who've died, and not letting the world get to you.
Their songs also tell stories, they aren't 'my girlfriend dumped me so I want to go die now' songs. Which is more than a lot of bands can say. How many of their songs are actually about breaking up with somebody? I can think of maybe three, in three albums.
They probably are emo, really. I'm just really stubborn when it comes to putting my bands into genres, and they're not what I consider emo.

No, emo is short for emotive hardcore, an emo band writes about their feelings and views toward society (not to be confused with punk [hatred of society]). My Chemical Romance is a band that writes about stories. Many of the stories they write are from comic books in New York City. Emo has nothing to do with style, you can't dress emotional. It's all a mindset. So, no.

For a long time I never even heard of 'My Chemical Romance'. I'm not so much into keeping up with popular music, I just listen to what I like.
Then I heard 'Helena' from 'My Chemical Romance' in an online video and I really liked it.
I'm a 27 year old housewife so, definitely not 'Emo' LOL I like a wide variety of music and I think lumping music into solely one category is wrong.
I guess it doesn't really matter if it is 'Emo'. Do you like it? Because that is what matters. :)

Technically, yes, because their style of music falls under the "emo" genre; however, since they are now so mainstream and their music is played on regular radio stations and on TV shows, I don't think true emo musicians and fans would consider them emo anymore, even though they helped popularize the emo sound and style. Same goes for Panic! at the Disco.

I suppose it depends on exactly how you define Emo, I would describe it as :
"Like Goth, only much less dark and much more Harry Potter"
I actually stole that from a post on urbandictionary.com It hits the nail on the head tho I think!!!
If this is the definition that you are using then I personally would say YES 'My Chemical Romance' ARE Emo!!!!
Ta-dah! :)

basically, yes mcr is an emo band. they have become mainstream and still hold strong to "emo qualities", even tho some try to say that now they have become to mainstream. same goes for hawthorne heights, panic at the disco etc.

Yes they are.
In my day, many moons ago, we used to call this kind of music 'soft rock' and take the p*ss that grannies liked it. How on earth did it ever become cool?????
And some people think that they're goth too??? LOL You young 'uns today...??!!?? Just because you paint your lips/eyes/hair black doesn't make your music gothic. Again - LOL!
