What you need to do is transfer files (music, pictures, etc.) from your laptop to your new desktop computer?
I suggest using a USB Flash Drive. They come in various sizes from 32mb to 4gb. Simply insert the USB Flash Drive into your laptop. Once recognized, start copying files from your laptop's hard disk drive onto the USB Flash Drive. Then remove the USB Flash Drive and insert it into your new desktop computer. Once recognized start copying the files from the USB Flash Drive into the appropriate folders on your desktop's computer hard drive. USB Flash Drives are very inexpensive and are made by many manufacturers. See the link below.

Perhaps the easiest and the safest way to do this is via the use of an external harddisk case.

You need to remove the harddisk from your damaged laptop, then place it into (newly purchased) external harddisk case. Then hook it up to your new computer via USB cable.

Your old harddisk will appear as an extra drive on your computer. If the drive shows no sign of damage, then you can continue to use it as your backup/portable drive.
