The deffinition of empire has many meanings and therefore the U.S has chosen its own Deffinition that makes it appear not as an Empire but as a Leading Nation that seeks the good decision for it's lesser peers.

The world expects us to police it. They ask us to, but then criticize us when we do too much, or not enough. The problem is with other countries and their perceptions of us, not necessarily with us. And, of course, with the media.

You kinda answered yer own question. If th US didn't "police the world" then we would get yelled at for being the richest most powerful nation in the world that does nothing to help the less fortunate.

Also an "empire" is a nation that collects natural reasources from colonies through the use of force. In today's global economy most mordern nations could be describes as being somewhat imperial because so much is imported into "1st world" nations from the "3rd world". However in the old imperial system the colonies rarely benefitted from the products they exported, the same cannot be said of todays "colonies" (e.g. Dubai).

p.s. to whoever asked: 1st, 2nd and 3rd world are terms that were used during the Cold War era and are technically obsolete in modern economics. The 1st world was the democratic nations of the world (mainly the "west"), the 2nd world represented the Communist block, and the 3rd world were the poorer nations comprised mostly of former colonies which the 1st and 2nd competed for.

Hi,

The U.S. is not an empire nor does it claim to be one, It is the workings of Darth bush that have made the evil empire a reality.

May the force be with us.

one has to remember also that when most anything goes worng in the world someone is dialing 911 America.. either for manpower, money or military assistance. being a "first" world nation (is there a second world country?) comes with some responcibility the debateis just in where and how much responcibility, when the tsuami hit noone complaind about us gathering up so much money and helping them out, nor did we complain when katrina hit and the world sent us cash we all live together on this planet... its just we are sorta stuck in a parental role with a few unruly children

Because it's an Empire but sugar coats it so as not to offend your sensibilities?

The good decision of it's lesser peers only if it has something of value to the United States that it can rob.

Oh, and, thanks for the thumbs down!

Maybe if the UN would quit begging for aid from the US to the rest of the world we could abstain from making decisions on how our tax dollars should be put to work internationally.
