Time.
Time is always the best gift.
If you have to buy a present, find one that you can enjoy together - perhaps an old movie on DVD, a dinner date or a trip to the mall.
This is true for everyone. Give a child a toy is fine, playing with that child and the toy is much much better.

I am almost into the same age bracket, and my best birthday present was a week-end trip, by car, to a small resort area. If money is a problem, take her out for dinner and a movie. Believe me, she will appreciate your time and thoughts more than more 'stuff'. Do NOT give bath powder, coffee mugs or anything else that needs dusting. A couple of movie dates, and a glass of wine will go a long way towards making her happy that you thought of her. No slushy cards, just makes more stuff to deal with, and we don't need/want anymore clutter. Tell her that you love her. Best wishes

Well, when my grandmother turned 85 we threw her a party, just the family, and we all got her things that we thought she'd need. She loves candy, so we got her a bunch of her favorite candies, a bag with plastic slots to put pictures in for the beach, a new tv for her, and a cleaning lady for a year so she doesn't have to clean her town house. The cleaning lady was the best gift because now we don't have to worry about her shoveling the walk way or vacuuming anymore, the cleaning lady does it for her.

Nothing material. Instead, give your time to her. Call and visit. At her age that is the best present. By the time one reaches their eighties they don't need any more gee-gaws, apparal, trips here and there, etc. They need to know they are not just an inconvenience to others and that someone wants to take the time to talk with them. Bring a cake with you. Spend some time with her over coffee and cake. This will be one of the best birthday presents she could ever receive. And believe me, the little twit responder directly above me is just that: A little twit. The last thing that most people who have reached old age want is to go back to their twenties. To most, the thought is appalling, even though young people seem to think it's very appealing. Trust me on this one.

Okay this depend on how close to her you are. Most people at this point in there life dont need things. they like what comes from the heart. you could right her a letter of her meaning to you. or you could hand make her something now matter how small or silly you might think it is it will mean much more to her than something you just buy.

If she is anything like my aunt who is 91 she would like a gift set of Estee Lauder with the perfume, dusting powder, and hand lotion in it. they run about $50-$90, but they are worth every penny.

It depends on what she likes: if it's books, art, flowers, travel. Just think about her preference and give her something according to that.

Some ladies like jewelry or dusting powder, or a bouquet of flowers. At least thats my experience with the elderly.
