He's got cradle cap, is that why he is scratching himself or is he just discovering his head?

It could be the cradle cap, but my kids didn't seem to be itchy from cradle cap. My second child had eczema, though, and he used to scratch his head (especially his forehead) until it bled until I got some prescription liquid Zantac and a weak steroid cream to put on his forehead. I was also given some drops for his scalp. You might want to watch for rashes or dry skin in other areas; eczema typically develops around 3-4 months of age.

We've just solved the same problem with our 4 month old. I finally tried baby oil for the cradle cap, just apply it liberally to the head at the beginning of a bath and wash it out with baby wash at the end and all the flakes are gone. We started putting socks over her hands at night and tuck them under the arms of her sleeper.

I also have a 5 month old that is starting to scratch her head, One thing could be that yes he is starting to discover his head. The best thing to do is the make sure his nails stay trimmed, and if that does not work, try mittens as a last resort.

Cut his fingernails and mittens.

My daughter tries to scratch her face all the time. The best way to combat the scratching is keeping the nails short and putting mittens on when they get too long.

Good luck

most likely just finding his head (sounds amusing really dnt it? bin there all this time n he's only just found it!!) but if ur really worried abt it try plain olive oil on his scalp for a night, it may reduce the itching. and try putting scratch mittens on that hav eleasticated wrist bands....the others come off in two seconds flat!! oh, n make sure his nails r nice n short...snt want any ouchies...

I know you are going to get a lot of good advice so please take this in the spirit it was meant.

Try sawing his hands off and putting them in cryogenic suspension, then, when he's 15 or so, have them sown back on again.

We had a problem with our youngest, he talked so much that we did this with his tongue.

It's great because we can now say.

" I know you have a civil tongue in your head, because i sewed it there myself" ( a famous quote i think)

Knowing so little about anything means i have to post yuk like this until i can figure out a way of opening an Encyclopaedia, then of course, i have to learn to read. Good luck with a proper answer, for which i am sure, there will be many.

all babies scratch themselves,to prevent breaking skin cut his nails and keep little mittens on his hands. to get rid of cradle cap, warm some baby oil and rub it in to soften it sufficiently to gently pick it off.

it could be both. as far as cradle cap goes though just mix a little bit of baby oil in his hair while shampooing and comb it out.(dont dig) it should go away soon.

dont bother with scratching mitts if he is itching. try socks. they stay on loads better. i dint think cradle cap itched tho. keep his nails short as well but thats a no brainer and i apologise for insulting your intelligence!

Could be either, or a combination of both. Just make sure you keep his fingernails nice and short, so that he can't really scratch himself.
