You're just NOW seeing that? I've seen this kind of 'service' going on for years, now. Maybe it's the different cities you and I live in, but it's been bad around here for a long time. And it's not limited to my own zip-code post office, either. Several PO's around town have the same problem -- 4 or more stations; 1 or 2 clerks -- never as many clerks as stations.

If the Post Office you went to has 8 windows it sounds like a rather large office. At many large post offices they now have Aotomated Postal Centers that are self-service and very easy to use.
As for being lazy, do you know that not every clerk at the Post Office is allowed to work the window. The Postal Service dictates the number of clerks that can work the window and the hours that they work the window. The union APWU (American Postal Workers Union) would love to have more clerks assigned to window detail, but due to budget constraints the USPS will not staff post offices adequately.
Letter Carriers are delivering more mail to more delivery points than ever, yet they are doing it with less workers than ever.
Lazy? Not in the least!

I was there on Saturday for a passport (that service being available on a Saturday was a one time event), that line was slow, but the regular line was moving right along. I guess it depends on where you are, just like the DMV.

I don't go to the p.o. for the exact reasons that you described.
