Were the mongols more of a blessing or curse (positive or negative force) of the places they conquered?

When the Mongols destroyed the Kwarezmian empire, they offered cities under siege two choices; resist, and be slaughtered, or capitulate, and have far greater control over themselves and freedoms that they had under the Shah. Is freedom a blessing or a curse?

One of the things that the Mongols gave to the world was stirrups. With stirrups, archers on horseback were able to stand (and ride at the same time); this meant they had better shooting accuracy. It was one of the reasons they were able to defeat so many cultures.

Apart from racheting up the military arms race, they didn't have much to offer. In fact, they usually assimilated into the cultures they conquered.

It depends on whether or not they killed you.

Seriously, as occupiers, they were rarely better or worse than local leaders. It'd help to tighten your focus to a specific group, or to compare and contrast their role in different cultures. Japan and central asia, for example, had radically different experiences of the mongols, since the mongols did not promote trade for japan (tho they did introduce gunpowder)
