Yes, it is considered to be quite good, although it is also still considered a second-tier university, after Oxford and Cambridge, naturally, and perhaps also after Edinburgh. Liverpool has a fine reputation and it is growing in prestige all of the time (along with Univ. London). It is also still remarkably ahead of the smaller and more localized universities and colleges.

I read an abstract of two of their researchers' paper on the Black Death, making a very strong case, and since substantiated by further research, that the rats and fleas stuff they taught us in school is bunk. I know it's not 20th century but it was damn good and in itself was enough to put the place at the cutting edge of research.
